Situation 1
In the reading class for a group of junior high school students, the teacher handed out a passage about American Indians. After explaining the new words and a couple of difficult structures, the teacher asked the students to read the passage and discuss the answers to some comprehension questions in pairs. The students, however, had little to say in the discussion because they said they didn’t quite understand the passage although they knew all the words.
Situation 2
In the speaking class, the teacher introduced various ways of making invitations. She listed a number of examples on the blackboard, such as “Would you have lunch with me today?” “Why don’t you come to my dinner party tomorrow?” Then the students practiced the invitations in pairs. It happened that it was Xiaoling’s birthday the next day, so she called her American teacher that evening: “Hello, Miss Smart. Why don’t you come over for my birthday tomorrow?”
